You’d be surprised how much havoc a clogged filter can wreak on your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s engine. Hummel’s Automotive Diagnostics and Repair is here for all of your vehicle maintenance needs including filter maintenance. Let’s talk about the different filters found in automobiles below and when they are generally recommended to be changed. These mileage durations may vary if your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends different milestones for filter changes.
Air
Generally, the air filter found in the engine needs to be changed every 12,000 miles. Your automobile’s owner’s manual will confirm this or provide a different milestone for this filter and all of the filters on our list. It’s important that you have a clean filter in the engine so that the air flows into the combustion chamber cleaned and ready for firing. A dirty air filter can affect your engine’s performance.
Cabin
The cabin filter should be changed every 30,000 miles, but check in your owner’s manual to make sure your automobile is equipped with one. Some vehicles have permanent netting for air purification. If you do have a cabin filter, checked the mileage milestone to see when it needs to be changed according to your vehicle’s manufacturer. Some manufacturers recommend changing the filter every 6,000 miles.
Fuel
You will also suffer from poor engine performance if the fuel filter gets clogged. In fact, you may be unable to start your automobile. You need to make sure the fuel filter is changed every 30,000 miles so that the fuel can flow through it easily. The fuel filter purifies the fuel before it is mixed with the air in the combustion chamber to be fired by the spark plugs.
Oil
A clogged oil filter can also affect your engine’s performance. In fact, it can inhibit oil circulation and kill your engine in less than 30 minutes. As such, it’s important that you have your oil changed every 3,000 miles because this is when the oil filter is changed, as well. If you use synthetic oil in your engine, the oil change duration will be longer.
Transmission
Finally, the transmission filter is another filter that is not found in every automobile. Consult with your owner’s manual to see if you have a transmission filter. If you do, the manual likely recommends that you have the transmission filter changed every 30,000 miles.
