How Do I Turn Off My Check Engine Light So It Doesn’t Come On Again?

There is no way for you to turn off the check engine light permanently yourself without damaging your automobile and voiding your extended warranty. The check engine light came on because there is something wrong, and disabling this dashboard warning opens you up to extensive engine damage. Hummel’s Automotive Diagnostic & Repair can determine why your check engine light came on, and we can fix the problem to make sure that it turns off naturally. Let’s talk about this further.

Reasons Why Check Engine Lights Come On

The main computer chip in your automobile is called the engine control module (ECM). This computer chip controls the systems in your car, truck, or utility vehicle. Each system has a sensor that sends data to the ECM while your vehicle is running. The ECM assesses this data and makes adjustments to ensure that your automobile is always operating as safely and efficiently as possible.

When a sensor alerts the ECM of a problem that it cannot fix itself, the ECM will warn you by using the series of lights that your automobile has on the dashboard. If the problem does not have an associated light, such as a low motor oil warning light, the engine control module will turn on the check engine light. This catch-all warning covers a variety of problems, including

  • A clogged or malfunctioning catalytic converter
  • An issue with your vehicle’s electrical system
  • A clog or leak in the exhaust system
  • Problems with the fuel system or fuel mixture
  • A gas cap that is too loose and leaking gas fumes
  • A dirty or malfunctioning mass airflow sensor
  • A malfunctioning or dead oxygen sensor
  • Problems with the spark plugs or their firing sequence
  • Transmission problems

As you can see, some of the issues can be quite serious, and if you choose to ignore the check engine light and continue to drive your automobile, you run the risk of creating greater problems.

Internet Hacks to Turn Off the Check Engine Light

There are plenty of internet hacks out there that will give you directions to turn off your check engine warning, but aside from possibly damaging your engine beyond repair, you also void your extended warranty as we mentioned above. In fact, this is one of the quickest ways to have any claims against the warranty rejected by the issuer immediately.
