Some of them are a sign of engine damage, so we recommend that you have your vehicle towed to our shop.

1. Grinding

Grinding can be a sign of engine damage. The engine will make this noise if there isn’t any motor oil circulating through it. A clogged oil filter can prevent oil circulation. Certain engine parts will also grind when they go bad, including the water pump and the alternator.

2. Hissing

If you hear a hissing noise in the engine, you may have a leaking vacuum hose. Aside from the sound, you will also start to have performance problems in your engine. Another thing that can make a hissing noise is fluid dripping on hot auto parts. The fluid may also sizzle.

3. Knocking

Knocking noises can also be an indication of engine damage. Specifically, if the pistons are clanking against the cylinder walls because the rod bearings are worn, your engine will knock. You may also hear the engine knock if there is a detonation problem in the cylinders.

4. Popping

A popping noise can come from the exhaust system. Specifically, the exhaust manifold will pop or tap if it is leaking. In addition, the catalytic converter will pop if it is clogged. Finally, you may hear popping noises when you accelerate if the muffler is damaged.

5. Rumbling

Your engine will also rumble if the muffler is damaged. Generally, the problem that makes the engine rumble loudly is a hole in the muffler. This being said, the engine will also rumble loudly if the catalytic converter has been stolen from the exhaust system.

6. Squealing

Finally, the most common cause of a squealing noise coming from the engine is a loose accessory belt. The belt itself may need to be replaced, or there may be a problem with the tensioner or pulley. Another auto part that will squeal when it is going bad is the power steering pump.
